Plumbing is a kneeling trade, so the knee is where trousers fail first and where the money is best spent. Look for double-layered knees or a shaped knee panel rather than the heaviest fabric weight — a heavier drill that wears through at the knee in the same place is not a better pant.

After that, pocket layout matters more than it does for most trades, because a lot of plumbing is done in a position where reaching a tool bag is awkward.

It depends entirely on where the work is. Domestic and internal commercial work usually does not require it. Anything on a construction site, in a road reserve, near traffic or on a site with vehicle movement generally does, and the site's PPE rules will state it rather than leaving it to the worker.

If you split your time between both, a taped shirt that is accepted on site is the simpler answer than owning two wardrobes.

Wash frequency helps more than anything else, but some garments carry an antibacterial treatment — Bisley's is called Fresche — that targets odour-causing bacteria in the fabric rather than masking the smell. It is not a substitute for washing, and it does help in the cases where you genuinely cannot wash gear daily.
