Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Almost always day/night rated, because loading docks and yards operate around the clock and the hazard is vehicle movement in poor light. It is also one of the few roles where you are repeatedly getting in and out of a vehicle, so a shirt that is comfortable seated matters more than usual.

Many depots require hi vis to be worn from the moment you leave the cab, including at customer sites where your own employer's rules do not apply.

Layers rather than one heavy garment, because the difference between a freezer and a loading dock is large and you cross it repeatedly. A hi vis base layer with a warm mid layer you can remove is more practical than a single insulated jacket you overheat in outside.

A bonded fleece-lined softshell is a good middle layer here — warm, not bulky, and it still reads as workwear.

That is the practical constraint for most transport work: you are subject to whichever site you are standing on, and their rules are not yours. The safest approach is to equip to the strictest requirement you regularly encounter rather than the average.

A day/night taped shirt is accepted essentially everywhere general hi vis is required, which is why it is the sensible default for multi-site work.
