It is a UPF rating, which describes how much ultraviolet radiation the fabric lets through to the skin underneath it. The scale is banded — 15 at the low end, then 30, then 50 and 50+ at the top — and the figure belongs to that specific fabric rather than to a shirt range as a whole.
